The Challenge

The United Nations’ Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) is a system for the communication of hazards and toxicity of chemicals. GHS provides a basis for international chemical legislation, including, in the EU, the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation EC 1272/2008. 

Manufacturers, importers and downstream users of substances and mixtures must classify, label and package chemicals using pictograms, signal words and standard statements before placing them on the market. Manufacturers and importers must submit classification and labelling to information to ECHA’s C&L inventory. 

Ensuring that hazard labelling and safety data sheets communicate risks effectively and in accordance with GHS and CLP is complex, costly and time intensive whether you import, manufacture or supply chemicals or mixtures.

  • Compliance Map tracks harmonised classification and labelling requirements listed in Annex VI of the CLP Regulation and facilitates the roll-up of verdicts (visual indicators) to identify hazardous chemicals in your substances, mixtures and articles
  • Hazard classes and statements, signal words, statement codes and hazard labels are tracked and maintained in the Compliance Map system to allow for the production of labels
  • Substances restricted under REACH or Medical Device Regulations, including substances which are classified under CLP as Carcinogenic, Mutagenic or Toxic to Reproduction (CMRs) are identified in the Compliance Map System
  • ‘Self-classified’ classification support for chemicals and mixtures/preparations
  • Centralised repository of all SDS and Extended Safety Datasheets
