In recognition that authors, performers and producers should receive an appropriate reward for the use of their work, many governments have established levies on recordable media.

Producers of recordable media, such as laptops, mobile phones and USB sticks, must report and pay fees to Collective Management Organisations (Societies), who then distribute funds to artists.

A major challenge to complying with Private Copying legislation is that each Society has different tariffs, reporting requirements, fee structures and schedules to comply against.
