The Challenge

Companies must conduct a due diligence exercise to ensure that none of the following substances are present in products above the allowed concentration when selling into the EU:

  • Cadmium (Cd) < 100 ppm
  • Lead (Pb) < 1000 ppm
  • Mercury (Hg) < 1000 ppm
  • Hexavalent Chromium: (Cr VI) < 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) < 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE) < 1000 ppm
  • Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) < 1000 ppm
  • Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) < 1000 ppm
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) < 1000 ppm
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) < 1000 ppm
  • The EU RoHS Directive has since proliferated from it's introduction in 2002 to have variations of it's provisions enacted in other jurisdictions such as China RoHS, Taiwan RoHS, UAE RoHS, Turkey RoHS, India RoHS, and so forth. All with variations in substance groups, reporting and exemptions used.
  • Companies require a robust system to gather the necessary information from suppliers and lab testing to verify compliance with the directive and report conformity to customers as well as produce technical files for CE marking or hazmat labels for China RoHS.

How we solve it

The Compliance Map solution facilitates compliance with worldwide RoHS regulations. Our RoHS Compliance Software offers licenses tailored to the unique requirements of each jurisdiction.

  • Our RoHS software may be integrated with your PLM or ERP system (including PTC Windchill or SAP) to mirror your product bill of materials (BOM). RoHS verdicts are calculated at the homogenous material level and rolled up to return RoHS compliance verdicts at every level of your BOM.
  • Verdicts flag whether products, parts and materials are non-compliant, compliant, compliant by exemption or missing data. You can also categorise your products to determine exemption expiry dates or exclude products which are out-of-scope.
  • Our solution enables a bi-directional interface with your ERP or PLM system to send back calculated verdict results to your source systems in real time.
  • RoHS declarations of compliance may be produced by the software and communicated with your supply chain. Custom declarations, labels, including China RoHS Hazmat labels, management reports and analytics may also be generated to drive your RoHS compliance program.
RoHS compliance data campaigns

A successful RoHS compliance program is dependent upon data quality and completeness. Our RoHS software integrates with third party databases, including the Silicon Expert platform, to import compliance data. Our software also offers automated data collection campaigns if you choose to collect data in-house or contract a third party, such as our compliance partner Anthesis, to collect data on your behalf.

  • Data collection can be through your bespoke data collection form, our Compliance Map data collection form, or via an industry standard format such as an IPC 1752A or IEC 62474 xml. Forms returned via the campaign are automatically mapped to applicable parts and validated for data quality. Automated acceptance and rejection emails can be triggered as well as reminders and escalations for unresponsive suppliers.
  • Your RoHS data campaign can be tailored to your business requirements, managing a range of data levels, including full material disclosures, material summaries and supplier declarations of compliance. Corresponding verdicts for data level as well as data completeness, provide indicators of data quality which can trigger actions such as part or material testing. Test reports, including IPC 1753 declarations, and other compliance documentation can also be imported into the RoHS compliance software.

RoHS compliance change management

Regulatory changes, including the expiration of exemptions, are displayed in the regulatory dashboard. Alerts can be triggered to inform your team of a change in compliance status, whether in response to a regulatory update, exemption expiry or as a result of new supplier data.

All changes are recorded in a verdict summary and all data archived. BOM snapshots can be generated to support declarations of compliance at a given point in time. Technical documentation can also be stored against components, to maintain an audit trail for inspection by regulatory bodies.

RoHS compliance expertise and support

Our in-house consultancy team monitors changes to existing and upcoming RoHS legislation and ensures that the software is up to date, as well as being prepared for changes not yet in force. Our regulatory experts can provide guidance on RoHS compliance and offer a range of free resources, including whitepapers and webinars.

RoHS compliance as part of a complete material compliance program

Our software is designed so that chemical regulations, including REACH, CLP, Prop 65 and TSCA as well as your own company or customer standards, can be managed alongside RoHS compliance.

Multiple verdicts can be displayed against your Bill of Materials, based on differing substances, thresholds, rules and calculations. Part, material and chemical data need only be collected in a single campaign to flag compliance with multiple regulations.
